God saw you were getting tired When a cure was not to be So he closed his arms around you And whispered "Come with me." With tearful eyes I watched you suffer And saw you fade away My heart is truly broken You fought so hard to stay But when I saw you sleeping Peacefully and free from pain I could not wish you back To suffer that again. So keep your arms around him Lord And give him special care Make up for all he suffered That seemed to me unfair If tears could build a stairway And memories were a lane, I would walk right up to heaven To bring you home again. No farewell words were spoken, No time to say goodbye, You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why. My heart still aches in sadness And secret tears still flow, What it meant to lose you - No one will ever know!
